Concepts in Contexts
Below is the Concepts-in-Contexts schematic we reviewed in class. It can be a useful tool for helping you to clearly envision your Fascination Project (or any other text that requires a critical focus).
If you have already focused on your topic and it is NOT a concept but some specific film, text, or theory, try thinking of what concepts relate to it. Maybe that concept will become your focus. Alternatively, perhaps that concept will be the context for your exploration regarding the thing you're exploring.
Thanks, as always, to Professor Tim Ray for originally introducing me to this schematic!

The Male Gaze
Laura Mulvey's 1973 germinal essay, "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" motivated a vibrant conversation about relationships between camera (shots, angles), characters, and viewers. From her essay emerges the term "the male gaze."
A few key points offer vibrant points of controversy, conflict, and potential. These include:
- The notion of cinematic POV as white, male, and heterosexual
- Audience participation in this POV
- Cultural coding that is reinforced and empowered by this POV
- Scopophilia
- Camera focus techniques that objectify and make female characters less than whole (physically, psychologically, and in terms of power or agency)
- Identification with the look of the "hero," furthering the power and normalization of the male gaze
- Passive female vs. Active male
